An example of bad SEO, duly penalized by Google

The case in point: a site that has shifted from white hat SEO to black hat SEO

PandaBy February 2012, I had started to reference the site. As usual, I relied on a strategy that seeks to produce quality content based on the enrichment of the website with updated and interesting content, as well as on the improvement of the existing texts, optimizing pages. I also published several blog posts and began a profitable interaction with Google+ users.
All this had led, after 12 months, to rankings that matched the value of the site after its enrichment. Rankings that Google’s staff would have approved if they could have analyzed them manually.
However, my client has partnered with someone who had computer skills, and who had the bright idea to make him save about 10%, by entrusting his website SEO to an Indian company, Ajastra.

After a few months, almost all rankings were lost. Look at the image below, the red digits representing the conquered rankings when they asked me to interrupt my SEO activity and, green digits, the current rankings in December 2014 (often there’s no ranking in green, since the website ranks lower than 12th):Google rankings

The bad links penalized by Panda and Penguin

This Indian company sent to my former client reports to demonstrate the implementation of the SEO strategy for his website. Besides having submitted artificial articles packed with keywords to sites of articles already penalized by Panda as, they also submitted the site of my former client to  a string of all directories that could do all but make him get a sound Google penalty, via Panda and Penguin. I made a screenshot of part of this list:

list of directories likely penalized by Google to which the website in question was submitted

directories likely penalized by Google to which the website was submitted

Directories like (number five on the list) are the exact artificial SEO target that Google righteously addresses, otherwise its search results pages would be dominated by sites that use the most artificial SEO techniques instead of being dominated by the most relevant websites, as it’s now mostly the case.

What if your site has such backlinks?
Well, you should implement Google’s procedure to disavow bad backlinks.

Google+, dos and don’ts

Google+ is an effective social network for business

Google+ has several advantages: it can create circles to distinguish the different types of people or companies that we follow. Not only that distinguishes privacy from professional life, but also allows to catalog the topics you want to follow by function: prospect, customer, competitor, interesting person or company, etc. Moreover, Google+ is very efficient and ergonomic: it’s easy to figure out how to use it. For example, one can make a hang-out that automatically becomes a video posted on YouTube.

What to do on Google+

I confirm what I had already written in this regard on how to use Google+, and would like to add:

  1. it is indeed a social network so you have to build relationships thereby
  2. to do this, use the search engine of Google+, specifying that you are looking for people and / or pages (if you are looking for companies)
  3. add to your circles those with a page showing recent activity
  4. choose preferably those who have won many + thanks to the interest of their publications, or those that have received a lot of visits, such as Consultimmo’s (a small French company ) Google+ page here on the right
  5. if you find a page is interesting and popular, you can always dig right into his circles to find other pages, firms or interesting people to follow
  6. interact with the pages you have inserted into your circle by doing them what you would like they to do with your page: give + to interesting publications, share them, add cool, relevant and brilliant comments
  7. try to publish articles (by posting their links on your Google+ page) that may be of interest to Google+ users, especially those whose page you have inserted in your circles
  8. If someone gives you a +, you could go to his page and give him a + on your turn …
  9. if someone adds a nice comment to your post, do not forget to put a + on his comment
  10. if someone shares one of your articles or publications, go to its page to check out if there is something worth sharing

What not to do on Google+

  1. use it as a window display, only for showing the products of your company or touting their merits there
  2. publish too many posts which are not enough interesting
  3. limiting yourself to publish content without taking care to interact with other users
  4. be stingy with +, shares, and positive comments about the publications of other users
  5. waste time in useless debates on social issues, politics, etc.
  6. be impatient, expect results right away: it takes time and passion

Thank you for your attention. Have you got any suggestions related to the use of Google+?

Why these three posts exceed 400 visitors per month

I analyze the relative success of three articles I have written for 3 corporate sites. Despite the tiny size of these three sites and companies, these three items are experiencing a remarkable volume of traffic. Let’s see why.

First successful post: 60 beautiful pools in the world, the reasons for its success

Google rankings of this article can not be considered a great success, as it is necessary to type keywords like “diaporama les plus belles piscines du monde” = slideshow most beautiful pools in the world to find this article in 15th position in Google. However, this post has received 45 back links, from 45 different sites. It contains 60 images, which also rank very well. Indeed, 80% of the traffic on this page comes from Google. You can also see a bounce rate of 58%, quite good for a blog page. The article can be considered a success, not only because it brings new visitors to the site (the last month, in September 2014, they were 474), but especially because it makes them want to explore the rest of the site, which brings new customers.

His popularity on social networks: it received won five + on Google+.

Second successful post: the shelf life of olive oil

Rankings of this article, this time, are a big hit, considering it is first or second on keywords like “conservation huile d’olive (conservation of olive oil)”. It has received a dozen links, 3 tweets and four   + on Google plus. In fact, I wrote this article in conjunction with a professional taster of olive oil. The quality level of the content is, in my opinion, the key to its success.

Third successful post: avoid feeding honey to babies

Again, a success in SEO because it is first on Google for “Éviter de donner du miel aux bébés (Do not feed honey to babies)”. It has only three back links, 2 + on Google+, but 42 likes on Facebook. Obviously, this sensitive subject has been treated in depth, so that some mothers wanted to share this article on Facebook.

Attracting +, shares, and visitors to your Google+ page

That Google+ pages can be an important tool for the visibility of your commercial website, is now a widely proven and recognized by the community of SEOs.

I want to share my practical experience on how to create and manage a successful Google+ page.

How I created and fueled a Google+ page with visitors, shares and +

Google+ page

Google+ page

I take as an example the Google+ page of a pool enclosure manufacturer, of which you can see a preview above.

As the manufacturer’s website displays, the page has got more than 530 + on Google+. How I took it to get here:

  1. I created a page with a nice picture
  2. I looked for Google+ pages that interact well with other pages, by giving +s to other Google+ posts, by sharing, by adding more pages to their Google+ circles. Looking for “pool” on Google+ enabled me to find plenty of pretty active and dynamic pages
  3. I tried to befriend the managers of each Google+ page, giving them +s, little comments, insofar as I find their content interesting, avoiding meek flattering, simply because people are not stupid …
  4. I obtained that a dozen page managers  regularly read the posts I publish on my page
  5. I try to post on my Google+ page original and interesting content, with beautiful pictures
  6. I often illustrate my articles and publications with explanations that can prompt people to share
  7. I always interact with those who put me +s, adding them to my circles or giving them a + in my turn, if their content deserves it
  8. I avoid using my Google+ page as a window display for products, because it would not be interesting enough for visitors, except for rare exceptions.

Do you have any advice or experiences to share about your Google+ page? Thank you!

World experts consider Google+ effective and beneficial for SEO and visibility

SEO look at Google plus

SEO look at Google plus

World experts have a high esteem of  Google+ SEO-wise

This is proof of the effectiveness of Google+, the social network Google often despicated as an unnecessary duplication of Facebook or even a failure. Indeed, a reliable and quite persuasive guarantee of efficiency, it is the number of shares and + Google+ that the world’s leading experts in SEO receive and display.

On blog posts , the site founded by Rand Fishkin which has become a global authority on SEO, the number of “plus” Google+, on average, is very close to the number of “like” Facebook, and is higher than that if the tweets. It is the same for SearchEngineLand.

And France ? Webrankinfo, to cite the most prestigious one, averages on its articles more  “plus” on Google+, than “like”  on Facebook.

Unless Google+ bashers deem to be better informed than the Gotha of  SEOs, this is an argument which should somewhat mitigate the overflowing stream of  their criticism.

Targeted Facebook advertising, dangerous, tedious or wacky?

I’m talking about the advertisements which appear on the right when connecting to your Facebook account.

Why Facebook advertising is wacky

Indeed, following what Facebook states to lure advertisers, Facebook advertising should target people according to their interests. If I buy a Facebook advertising to sell tennis rackets, Facebook, based on the data it collects (hopefully respecting privacy) on behalf of its users, should show such advertising on the pages of the social network accessed by users who play tennis. Awesome targeting, unlike television advertising that bombs me, for example, with sugar-packed products that I never buy.

Facebook advertising targeting me

Facebook advertising targeting me

In the reality, Facebook targeting is imprecise and sassy!

Look, right here, a sample of the ads that appear on my Facebook page today, and understand why I could not care less:

  1. Renault Clio: I have no need to rent a car, especially not in Saint -Étienne, an hour from home, reachable only by car… !
  2. Holland tumbles – so? To be interested in this article, I should find myself alone in a rainy Sunday without Internet connection. But then I would not have Facebook, so my interest in this advertisement is again close to zero.
  3. Wanted 30 or more men: even if I wasn‘t an irreducible monogamous, the proposal “meeting with fun people in your area” makes me think these gals would only want to have fun with my credit card…
  4. More muscles : this is the male equivalent of a woman with a silicone inflated chest. Yuck!
  5. Free simulation, calculate your monthly payment : I’ve never bought anything on credit…
  6. Hot and sexy : this reminds me of the good old directories that we used in the childhood era of SEO…

Why Facebook advertising is dangerous

In fact, sometimes, the targeting works. For example, a woman could control her husband Facebook account : if it displays too much sex or viagra advertising, she’d better have a few doubts about his loyalty…

Again, an employer may find that his employee is targeted by job search services advertising: a sign he is not happy with his job…

 Why Facebook advertising is tedious

I much prefer Google+, which has no advertising. And you, what do you think of advertising on Facebook? Thank you for your comments, kindly put a on Google+ this item, if you enjoyed it.

Flattering comments are spam penalized by Google

Flattering comments spam comments to your post, such as “this article is brilliant” … are almost always written to entice you to publish the comment with the link … they are SPAM, Google knows this and will penalize you!

In general, we should only publish comments that, even if written by a competitor, bring something to our article or blog post in terms of content, accuracy or enrichment .

flattering spammy commentsPlease help me to deliver the Web from this pest that are flattering comments , sharing this article on the social networks or sharing this picture right here .

Hummingbird is likely to favor blogs as SEO tool

Google hummingbirdConcerning the characteristics and performance of the latest update of the Google algorithm called Hummingbird, I refer you to  Search Engine Land’s excellent article on Hummingbird.

The effects of Hummingbird in two points

  1. it better understands the content and purpose of your website
  2. therefore your website, inasmuch it’s got quality content, will rank better on a wider range of secondary or long tail keywords, even if you do not have targeted them or if they are not much present in your site

Why the Google algorithm better understand your site, two points

  1. it is better at detecting the true meaning of words and phrases beyond mere literary significance. For example, if you write “when it’s raining cats and dogs”, it should understand that ythe phrase is about weather and not animals.
  2. thanks to the fact that it better understands the relationship between concepts , he understands better the whole context

What to do

  1. create quality content that can provide original, relevant and useful information for users
  2. give more importance to the content and less to keywords
  3. better follow Google’s guidelines for good rankings

Why blogs are becoming more useful SEOwise

Because they are an ideal tool to create attractive content to make your site a valuable resource for users interested not only in your products but in their proper utlisation, and all that is within our field of activity, from the point view of your customers and prospects.

Southern Italy, real estate opportunities

Real estate in southern Italy

Real estate in southern Italy

Here’s why you can buy beautiful and valuable real estate in Italy at a bargain price.

Southern Italy offers unparalleled beauties for your vacations. The sea is limpid and warm, seafood is delicious, climate is dry and not too hot, the coast presents a variety of beaches and resorts. You prefer an uncontaminated and quite seaside? You’ve got it. You’d rather choose a more glamourous beach? There are places like Amalfi, Positano, Tropea and Gallipoli, to name a few, that feature almost every kind of leisure.

Now, some circumstances made aparments and villas in southern Italy astonishingly inexpensive:

  1. the Euro is depreciating versus the Dollar and most currencies
  2. Italian banks suffer a real credit crunch, dampening the mortgage market for real estate acquisitions
  3. Unemployment is at record highs
  4. Purchasing power is at record lows
  5. Many are selling their secondary residences in order to raise cash
Actual real estate prices in southern Italy, on the coast, at the seaside, at few seconds walking from the beach? Between 800 and 1200 $ per square meter, even at 40 minutes driving from airports, unless they’re in a famous resort; but even there, they’re mostly cheaper than 2000 $ for square meter. Just choose a place on Google Maps .it, an search for immobiliare (real estate) + the place name on
